A dry and hard-pack track formed loose berms of dust and gave the terrain a curious mix of properties “it even feels like sand in some places,” commented Bike it Cosworth Wild Wolf Yamaha’s Arnaud Tonus, one of the stand-out figures in MX2.

Tommy Searle was suitably attacking on the CLS Monster Energy Kawasaki and took second place to the vanishing Roczen while the German’s team-mate Jeffrey Herlings offered partial resistance in third. Zach Osborne whipped the Bike it Yamaha into the gusts for some spectacular photographs and the slim-line American was fourth just ahead of Tonus.

The loud music in the vast and towering Monster Energy hospitality was cranked up when Frossard sealed his first Pole Position in his maiden outing for Yamaha in convincing fashion. Behind, Honda World Motocross’ Evgeny Bobryshev profited from Shaun Simpson’s arm-pump to take second from Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Clement Desalle. World Champion Tony Cairoli rallied to fifth behind team-mate Max Nagl – the German also on a works Red Bull Teka KTM – while Yamaha’s David Philippaerts was sleeping for the opening laps: “In the beginning I was terrible but I found a rhythm and drew up to the leading group.”
